World Environment Day celebrations held across Kulgam

Day marked awareness rallies, sanitation drives, plantation drives and pledge ceremonies

KULGAM: To raise awareness about ecology and environment among the masses, various functions were held across Kulgam on the eve of ‘World Environment Day-2023’.

The main function was held at Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Yaripora which was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Dr.Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat.

Speaking on the occasion the DC highlighted the measures taken to make Kulgam beautiful and clean. He said that every small action counts in creating a greener future and let us stand up against plastic and Beat Plastic Pollution which is also the theme of this year’s World Environment Day.

He urged the student community and youth to play their role in disseminating the message of environment protection, adding that the children are the future of the nation which have greater responsibilities to shoulder ahead.

ACR Mir Imtiyaz-ul-Aziz, CEO, Mushtaq Qadri, Tehsildar and other officers were also present in the function.

Meanwhile to celebrate the day, Tourism Department Kulgam in collaboration with Aharbal Development Authority and Rural Development Department also organised a function at Aharbal.

The event witnessed participation of students from various schools besides PRIs and locals.

On the occasion, a rally was taken out by school children, staff and other participants to spread environment day messages to the general public. The rally passed through Aharbal market and culminated near Aharbal Waterfall.

A plantation drive was also organised wherein plant sapling were planted to encourage and motivate others to take part in plantation activities

Meanwhile, the speakers from schools, officers from various departments highlighted the historical background of the day and added that collectively we have to work to preserve and safeguard the environment from more depletion.

Speaking on the occasion, CEO ADA Ghalib Mohi-Ud-Din Shah asked all to join hands on this World Environment Day to protect our planet and make it a better place for generations to come.

The AD Tourism emphasized the need for developing sensitivity towards protection of the environment and surroundings. She said multi-dimensional climatic threats have come into existence which needs to be addressed for our healthy survival.  She also highlighted the initiatives taken to boost tourism in the district.

Later, a plantation drive was also carried out in Aharbal which was jointly kick-started by the CEO Aharbal and AD Tourism.

ACD Kulgam Mohammad Imran and other officers participated in the programme.
