Backyard poultry training, chick distribution programme held at KVK Budgam

BUDGAM: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Budgam, SKUAST-Kashmir on Friday organised a Backyard Poultry Training cum Chick and Feed Distribution programme at the Kendra.

The event was held under the Tribal Sub Plan component of the Poultry Seed Project of the Division of LPM FVSc and A H SKUAST-K.

During the programme, 300 VanRaja poultry birds and feed were distributed free of cost among 30 tribal farmers of Drang area of district.

The programme was chaired by Director Extension SKUAST-K Prof. Dil Mohammad Makdhoomi.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dil Mohammad Makdhoomi stressed upon the need of backyard poultry farming for improving the food and nutritional security of the rural areas.

OSD to Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K and Principal Investigator of the project, Prof. Azmat Alam Khan deliberated upon the importance of backyard poultry farming and its role in increasing the livelihood of people living in rural areas.

In a separate function, the KVK Budgam, SKUAST-Kashmir under Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)-CTR 2022 organized a training programme to sensitize the farmers regarding conservation and reuse of water.

The programme was attended by more than 75 farmers.

Senior Scientist and Head KVK Budgam, Dr. Bilal Ahmad Lone while elaborating on the campaign stressed to promote water use efficiency for irrigation (Per Drop More Crop) and better choice of crops for water conservation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shazia Ramzan (Soil Scientist, KVK Budgam) underlined the issue of water scarcity for agriculture in view of climate change. She also gave emphasis on different techniques of water harvesting, importance of organic farming and scientific methods of composting and vermin-composting.

She stated about Jal Shakti Abhiyan as a revolutionary mission that cannot be achieved without sincere efforts particularly avoiding indiscriminate use of water.

Programme Assistant-Fisheries, Iram Farooq interacted with the farmers on the occasion and spoke about the water reuse in aquaculture and about judicious use of water to reduce the pressure on one of the important natural resources.
