JRL calls for shutdown today

Srinagar: A spontaneous shutdown was observed in Srinagar parts against the killing of militants and the house owner’s son at Fateh Kadal on Wednesday morning.
Reports said soon after the news about the killing of two militants and the son of a house owner in Fateh Kadal area of old city spread, people observed a shutdown which hit normal life in many city parts.
Though authorities had already announced closure of schools and colleges in Srinagar, the shutdown affected movement of vehicles on all city roads. Shops, business establishments as well as various government offices located in various city areas witnessed a closure.
Meanwhile, Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik while expressing deep anguish and grief over the killing of son of the house owner and two militants in Fateh Kadal on Wednesday called for valley wide protest shutdown on Thursday.
In a statement issued here JRL said the “state machinery is all out to crush people in order to defeat their dissent. Communication lines are blocked as internet is suspended frequently. Youth and activists are arbitrarily booked under draconian PSA and sent to outside jails. There is no law in the land except the law of the state’s might. Universities and colleges are forcibly closed to disallow students from raising their voice against daily killings and atrocities. Kashmiri students in and outside universities are booked in false cases and harassed. Even news reporters and photographers are not spared and are thrashed.”
Alleging that “election dramas” are foisted upon people through force while our very existence as a people is legally threatened in Indian Supreme Court, the JRL said “Kashmir has become a classic case of occupation. No voice of humanity and justice is heard in India,” the statement alleged.
JRL said “people will observe a protest shutdown on Thursday against the atrocities being inflicted on people including gruesome killings, arbitrary arrests and PSAs, destruction of homes, harassment of students, attack on journalists and all other measures of repression.”
