CWC summons news portal over minor’s interview without parental consent
Srinagar, July 2: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Srinagar, has summoned the representative of a local news portal over allegations that it interviewed and recorded a minor without obtaining informed consent from the child’s parent or legal guardian and without the knowledge or permission of the concerned school authorities.
According to the summon, the Committee has directed the Editor/Authorised Representative of Fair Voice News, Srinagar, to appear before it on July 3, 2026, at 12 noon at the CWC office in Srinagar.
The summons further directs that the reporter or interviewer concerned, along with the cameraperson and any other media personnel present during the interview, accompany the authorised representative during the appearance.
The CWC said that if the allegations are found to be true, the act may constitute a violation of the child’s rights protected under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, as well as the media-reporting safeguards issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) concerning the protection of a child’s identity, privacy, dignity and best interests.
The Committee has also sought a written explanation detailing the circumstances under which the interview was conducted. In addition, it has asked the news organisation to produce copies of the recorded interview, the published or broadcast material, any consent or authorisation relied upon, and all other relevant documents in its possession.
The summons warns that failure to appear before the Committee or furnish the required information and documents may invite appropriate action in accordance with the law. (KNO)
