J&K must create new exporters to meet 2030 export target: CM Omar
Srinagar, June: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the Union Territory needs to broaden its exporter base and diversify its products to meet the Centre’s target of doubling exports by 2030.
Speaking after inaugurating the J&K International Buyer-Seller Meet in Srinagar, Abdullah said the region has a limited timeframe to substantially increase exports and create opportunities for businesses that currently cater only to domestic markets.
He said the government intends to assist existing exporters while encouraging new entrepreneurs, artisans and manufacturers to enter international markets by making the export process more accessible.
The chief minister said the buyer-seller meet provides a platform for exporters, manufacturers, artisans, self-help groups and overseas buyers to establish business linkages and explore new markets for products from Jammu and Kashmir.
Recalling the region’s long trading tradition, Abdullah said Kashmir’s handicrafts and other products had historically reached global customers through tourists, who often carried them abroad and built lasting relationships with local artisans.
He said changes in the tourism landscape over the years had compelled artisans and businesses to adopt new marketing and export strategies.
Highlighting regional disparities in exports, Abdullah said nearly 98 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir’s exports originate from just four districts, while the remaining districts contribute only a small fraction.
He stressed the need to expand export activity across all districts to ensure wider participation in economic growth.
The chief minister also reiterated the demand for establishing a dry port in Jammu and Kashmir, saying it would simplify export procedures and ensure that outbound shipments are officially recorded from the Union Territory instead of other states.
According to Abdullah, such a facility would make exporting easier for local businesses and help accurately reflect Jammu and Kashmir’s export performance.
