Dear Sir,
Pavements: Tracing Life, Reclaiming Dignity
The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling elevating the right to safe pavements into a core component of Article 21 is a visionary, much-needed moral wake-up call. For decades, our lopsided urban development has aggressively prioritised vehicular horsepower over basic human life.
Consequently India faces a tragic statistic of over 20,000 pedestrian deaths annually due to neglected un-walkable infrastructure. Walking is truly the simplest human activity inextricably tied to daily survival.
Reclaiming our sidewalks from illegal encroachments and vehicle dumping is not a mere engineering puzzle but an ethical mandate. Municipalities must build with profound civic empathy to turn concrete slabs back into safe pathways of shared human dignity.
