Police foil terror bid in north Kashmir; foreign-made pistols, ammunition seized
Srinagar, Jun 9: Security forces have recovered two pistols, magazines and 13 live rounds after a vehicle checking operation led to the arrest of a man in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
An official said that a mobile vehicle checking point was established by Baramulla Police and 52 Rashtriya Rifles at Chandsuma, Kanispora, near the FCI Godown on June 7. During checking, a white Maruti Brezza bearing registration number JK02DN-6527, travelling from Srinagar towards Baramulla, was intercepted for inspection.
A thorough search led to the recovery of one Turkish-made pistol — CANIK TP9SF METE (9×19 mm) — from a bag carried by the co-passenger, who failed to produce any valid licence or legal authorisation for the weapon, officials said.
The accused was identified as Wakeel Ahmed Theekri, son of Noor-ud-Din Theekri, a resident of Kamalkot, Uri. A case under FIR No. 70/2026, Sections 7/25 of the Arms Act, was registered at Police Station Baramulla and the weapon was seized, they added.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the driver was providing a ride to the co-passenger and claimed no knowledge of the recovered weapon, officials said.
On June 8, at the instance of the arrested accused, police conducted a search operation at Kalsi Hardu, Kamalkot, Uri in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, the local Lambardar and Chowkidar, they said.
During the operation, one Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 13 live rounds of ammunition were recovered and seized as evidence, officials added.
The fresh recovery points towards a larger unlawful arms possession network, police said, adding that further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the recovered weapons and ammunition and to identify any other persons involved. (KNS)
