Projects to improve connectivity, ensure safer travel and benefit thousands of residents in border villages

Pulwama: In a significant development for the residents of Rajpura Tehsil in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, the government has sanctioned the construction of two major bridges over the Nallah Romshi, addressing a long-pending demand of people living in several remote and cut-off villages.
The approval of the bridge projects is being viewed as a major infrastructure boost for the region, where residents have for years faced immense hardships due to inadequate connectivity, particularly during the rainy season and periods of flooding.
Locals said the bridges will not only improve access within Pulwama district but will also strengthen road connectivity with neighboring Budgam district, making travel easier, safer, and more reliable for thousands of people.
Residents stated that the absence of permanent bridge infrastructure often forced commuters, students, patients, and farmers to undertake longer and riskier routes to reach their destinations. During inclement weather, movement across the area would frequently become difficult, causing disruptions to daily life.
“We have been demanding these bridges for many years. Every rainy season brought uncertainty and difficulties for the people living on both sides of the Nallah Romshi. The sanctioning of these projects has brought immense relief to our villages,” said a local resident from Rajpura.
Another resident said the bridges would prove particularly beneficial for students and patients who often faced delays while travelling to schools, colleges, hospitals, and government offices.
“Many students had to leave their homes early and travel long distances due to the lack of proper connectivity. Patients requiring urgent medical attention also faced serious difficulties. These bridges will make travel much easier and safer,” he said.
Local farmers also welcomed the decision, saying improved road access would help them transport agricultural produce to markets more efficiently.
“Our economy largely depends on agriculture and horticulture. Better connectivity means reduced transportation challenges and improved access to markets. This project will positively impact the livelihoods of many families,” a farmer said.
Residents further noted that the bridges would play a crucial role during emergencies by ensuring uninterrupted movement of ambulances, essential supplies, and emergency services.
They expressed gratitude to the administration for addressing a long-standing public grievance and hoped that construction work would commence at the earliest so that the benefits of the projects could reach the people without delay.
Officials said the bridges are expected to enhance regional connectivity, improve road safety, facilitate socio-economic development, and strengthen links between several villages of Rajpura Tehsil and adjoining areas of Budgam district.
