Road caves-in near Naira Pulwama raises safety concerns, say locals
Hampers access to Lassipora industrial estate
Pulwama: A major road cave-in near Naira village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has emerged as a serious safety threat for thousands of commuters and transporters using the vital Pulwama–Lassipora road every day.
The affected stretch, which has sunk significantly over the past few days, has narrowed the carriageway and made vehicular movement risky, particularly for heavy vehicles, passenger buses, and industrial transport heading towards the SIDCO Industrial Estate Lassipora—one of the largest industrial hubs in Jammu and Kashmir.
The road serves as a crucial link connecting several villages with Pulwama town and the industrial estate. Residents said the damaged portion has become a potential accident spot and requires urgent attention from the concerned authorities.
Locals expressed concern that the sinking road could worsen further if timely repairs are not undertaken, especially with increasing traffic movement on the route.
“This road is used by hundreds of vehicles every day, including trucks carrying industrial goods and employees commuting to the industrial estate. The sinking portion has created a dangerous situation and any negligence could lead to a major accident,” said a resident of Naira.
Another local commuter said that drivers are being forced to slow down abruptly while crossing the damaged section, resulting in traffic congestion and increasing the risk of collisions.
“The road has developed a deep depression and vehicles have to maneuver carefully to pass through. During the night or in bad weather, the danger becomes even greater. Authorities should act before any unfortunate incident occurs,” he said.
Industrial workers and transport operators also voiced concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, stating that the route is essential for smooth movement of raw materials, finished goods, and workforce to and from the industrial estate.
A transport operator said, “Lassipora Industrial Estate is a key economic hub of the region. Any disruption on this road directly affects industrial activities and transportation. The damaged stretch needs immediate restoration.”
Residents alleged that despite the visible damage, no substantial repair work has been initiated so far. They urged the district administration, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, and other concerned agencies to conduct an immediate assessment of the affected portion and undertake permanent restoration measures.
“We request the administration to treat the issue on priority. Temporary patchwork will not solve the problem. A proper engineering solution is needed to prevent further sinking and ensure the safety of commuters,” said another resident.
Locals warned that if the road condition continues to deteriorate, it could not only disrupt daily life and industrial operations but also increase the likelihood of serious road accidents on one of Pulwama’s busiest routes.
They appealed to the authorities to immediately secure the damaged stretch, install warning signs, and begin repair work without delay to prevent any loss of life or property.
