Low hanging transformer at Rakh Litter sparks safety fears among residents
Pulwama: Residents of Rakh Litter area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have expressed serious concern over a power transformer installed at an unusually low height along the main road, alleging that it poses a constant threat to the lives of pedestrians, particularly children.
According to locals, the transformer has been installed barely a foot above the ground and is equipped with exposed wires and conductors that are easily accessible.
They said the absence of protective barricading, insulation, and other safety mechanisms have turned the site into a potential hazard.
Residents said that short-circuit incidents near the transformer have become a recurring issue, creating panic among people living in the area and those using the road.
“The transformer has been installed very close to the ground, while several wires around it are hanging at a dangerously low level. This poses a grave threat to human life, especially to children who may unknowingly come in contact with the live wires,” said Zahoor Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that despite repeatedly bringing the issue to the notice of officials from the Power Development Department (PDD), no concrete action has been taken so far.
“We have approached the concerned authorities several times and requested them to either shift the transformer or raise it to a safer height. However, our concerns have not been addressed,” he added.
Another resident, Ghulam Nabi, said the transformer contains exposed conductors and naked wires that can be easily touched by anyone passing nearby.
“The transformer is located right alongside a busy road and is within easy reach of children. Since there is no fencing or protective barrier around it, any accidental contact could prove fatal. The authorities should not wait for an unfortunate incident to happen before acting,” he said.
Locals said children frequently play in the vicinity and may not be aware of the dangers posed by electrical installations. They warned that the current condition of the transformer could lead to a serious accident at any time.
Residents further alleged that no link set or other protective safety equipment has been installed around the transformer, increasing the risk of electrocution.
“The transformer is barely one foot above the ground. Anyone can easily touch the exposed wires. It is a disaster waiting to happen,” said another resident.
The residents urged senior officials of the Power Development Department and district administration to immediately inspect the site and take necessary corrective measures, including raising the transformer to a safe height, insulating exposed wires, and installing proper barricading around the installation.
They said prompt intervention is necessary to prevent any loss of life and ensure the safety of commuters and local residents.
