Online Gaming Industry in Jeopardy
The Supreme Court’s retrospective tax ruling has plunged India’s booming online gaming sector into unprecedented turmoil, leaving over 100,000 jobs hanging in limbo.
By threatening tax outflows that drastically exceed top line revenues this regulatory turbulence paralyzes compliant domestic operators. Imposing excessive fiscal pressure on an industry built around skill and innovation is counterproductive.
Instead of curbing risk these severe measures will inevitably drive users toward unregulated offshore illegal betting platforms draining national revenue. Policymakers must reassess this systemic chokehold. We need a balanced sustainable framework that safeguards consumer protection while fostering economic growth rather than completely dismantling a flourishing digital ecosystem.
