Say women, elderly forced to walk long distances for water
Locals allege negligence in Mechanical Water Works Scheme

Pulwama: Residents of Gujjar Colony in Galander area of Pampore have appealed to the authorities for the immediate restoration of drinking water supply, alleging that the locality has been facing an acute water crisis due to the alleged negligence in the Mechanical Water Works Scheme Galander Pampore.
The residents said that despite repeated pleas and complaints to the concerned department, the issue has remained unresolved, causing immense hardship to dozens of families in the area.
Locals alleged that the shortage of potable water has badly affected their daily lives, particularly during the ongoing warm weather conditions. They said women, children and elderly persons are the worst affected, as they are compelled to travel long distances to fetch water for drinking and other household purposes.
“We are suffering badly because there is hardly any regular supply of drinking water in our locality. Every day we have to walk far away carrying buckets and containers just to arrange water for our families,” said a local resident of the colony.
Another resident said the situation has become unbearable over the past several days and accused the concerned department of failing to respond despite repeated representations.
“The authorities should understand that water is a basic necessity. We have knocked at every door, but unfortunately no concrete action has been taken so far,” he said.
An elderly resident expressed concern over the difficulties faced by senior citizens and women. “Old people and women cannot continue carrying water from distant places every day. The government must intervene immediately and restore the supply,” he added.
The residents stated that the prolonged disruption in water supply has also raised fears of health and sanitation issues in the locality. They urged the administration and Jal Shakti Department to take immediate steps for ensuring regular and adequate drinking water supply to the area.
The residents requested the higher authorities to personally look into the matter and direct the concerned officials to resolve the issue without further delay.
“We humbly request the administration to come to our rescue and restore the water supply at the earliest. Timely action can save the people from further suffering,” the residents said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Dr Basharat Qayoom assured his intervention in this regard and said that area will get water soon
