Srinagar: Continuing the drive against drug trafficking under the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, police arrested three drug peddlers in Awantipora and Anantnag and recovered contraband substances from their possession, a police spokesman said Sunday.
He said that a police party at Aripal during naka at Darganiegund intercepted two suspicious persons. During search, 1.89 Kgs of Cannabis like were recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Bashir Ahmad Ganie son of Ghulam Qadir Ganie resident of Dar Gani Gund and Mohammad Yousef Ganie son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie resident of Yangwani Aripal. They have been arrested and shifted to police station where they remain in custody.
In Anantnag, a police party at Bijbehara, while conducting naka checking at Tulkhan Crossing, intercepted and apprehended one person identified as Abdul Gani Sofi son of Mohammad Rajab Sofi resident of Sethar Sangam. During his personal search, 102 grams of charas in the form of sticks, concealed in corn husk, was recovered from his possession.
Accordingly, cases under relevant provisions of law have been registered at respective police stations and investigation has been taken up.
Meanwhile, police organised awareness programmes at different locations in Baramulla and Awantipora to spread awareness against drug abuse and promote a healthy, drug-free society.
Police at Chandoosa in collaboration with Government Higher Secondary School Kachu organised a Mini Marathon aimed at sensitizing youth about the harmful effects of drugs and encouraging them to adopt a healthy lifestyle, the spokesman added.
Students and staff members participated enthusiastically in the event and raised slogans promoting a drug-free society. Similarly, Drug Awareness Programme was organised at Government High School Nagbal in which the ZEO Chandoosa, teachers, students and local residents participated. During the session, speakers highlighted the social and psychological impact of substance abuse and stressed the importance of collective community efforts in eradicating the menace of drugs from society, he said.
In Awantipora, an awareness programme was conducted by Police at Pampore with religious leaders and respectables of the area. During the programme, participants were sensitized about the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need for collective efforts to eradicate the menace from society.
Officers highlighted the important role of religious leaders and community members in spreading awareness, guiding youth, and encouraging a drug free environment. The participants pledged their support and assured cooperation in strengthening anti-drug efforts and making society safer and free from the menace of narcotics.
Meanwhile, intensifying its all-out offensive against drug trafficking and the narcotics ecosystem, police in Anantnag conducted a large-scale, simultaneous Narco Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) at 20 identified locations across the district.
The coordinated operations were carried out by specially constituted police teams under the close supervision of senior officers, based on specific leads developed during investigation of NDPS cases and other actionable intelligence regarding drug peddlers, kingpins, and their associates, the spokesman said.
To enhance the effectiveness of the searches, K9 squads were also deployed during the operations. The searches primarily focused on suspected hideouts, transit points, and locations linked with individuals believed to be involved in narcotics trafficking or providing support to the illegal network.
The district-wide operation forms part of Police’s sustained strategy to dismantle the entire narcotics ecosystem by targeting not only peddlers but also facilitators, financiers, and other persons connected with the illicit trade.
Police also carried out a campaign against drug abuse and illegal narcotic cultivation under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan.
Police in Baramulla carried out an extensive wild bhang destruction drive in the areas of Souchipora and Astaan Mohalla Kreeri.
During the operation, police teams destroyed large patches of wild bhang cultivated over open areas and nearby land pockets. The drive was conducted with active support and cooperation from local residents and members of civil society, reflecting the growing public participation in the fight against drug menace.
The operation forms part of the continuous efforts of Police to dismantle every possible source contributing to narcotics and substance abuse, especially among youth. Police officers also interacted with locals during the drive and urged them to remain vigilant and immediately report any instances of illegal cultivation or drug-related activities in their areas.
Police reiterates its firm commitment towards building a drug-free society and ensuring strict action against all elements involved in promoting narcotics in any form, the spokesman added.
