Vital Trenz–Arihal road in shambles, locals demand urgent macadamisation
Pulwama: The vital Trenz to Arihal road in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district continues to remain in a severely dilapidated condition, with residents from several villages expressing anger over the authorities’ failure to undertake macadamisation work for years.
The road, considered an important link connecting parts of Shopian and Kulgam districts with Srinagar via Pulwama, has become a major source of inconvenience for commuters due to its damaged surface, potholes, and uneven patches. The stretch passes through a number of densely populated villages including Trenz, Sheikhpora, Sanzan, Allowpora, Marhang, Ahgam, and Arihal.
Locals said the condition of the road has deteriorated badly over time, making daily travel difficult and risky for passengers, students, patients, and transporters. They alleged that despite repeated appeals to the concerned departments, no substantial repair or macadamisation work has been carried out.
“The road has turned into a nightmare for commuters. Deep potholes and broken portions can be seen everywhere, causing frequent damage to vehicles and creating serious risks for passengers,” said Reyaz Ahmad, a resident of Marhang.
Residents said the worst affected are school-going children, elderly people, and patients who are often forced to travel on the unsafe road during emergencies.
Asif Ahmad, a local social activist, said the road is presently in an extremely poor condition and requires immediate macadamisation to provide relief to the public.
“This road is of great public importance as it connects several villages and also serves as a link for people travelling from Shopian and Kulgam towards Pulwama and Srinagar. Unfortunately, its condition has worsened with every passing year,” Asif Ahmad said.
He said commuters are facing immense hardships due to the damaged surface and accused the concerned authorities of ignoring the issue despite repeated public demands.
“The road is full of potholes and large cracks, making travel difficult and unsafe. People are suffering on a daily basis and vehicles are getting damaged regularly. The authorities must immediately take up macadamisation work before the situation worsens further,” he added.
Another resident from Trenz questioned why public representatives and political leaders remain silent on such basic issues affecting thousands of people every day.
“When political leaders can raise their voices on other matters, why can’t they highlight this serious public issue? This road is essential for thousands of commuters,” he said.
Locals have urged the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department and the district administrations of Pulwama and Shopian to prioritize the Trenz–Arihal road in upcoming development plans and start macadamisation work at the earliest.
“We are only demanding a safe and motorable road. The government should not ignore the genuine problems of the people,” they said.
