Hotels, resorts and houseboats across the Valley report sharp rise in destination wedding bookings as families shift from foreign venues to Kashmir

Srinagar: Kashmir is witnessing a significant rise in destination wedding bookings after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging people to promote domestic tourism by choosing Indian destinations over foreign travel.

Hotels, resorts and houseboats across Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam say they have received a noticeable increase in wedding-related inquiries and advance bookings from families across the country looking to host grand celebrations in the Valley.

Tourism stakeholders said many families who earlier preferred destinations such as Dubai, Thailand and Turkey are now opting for Kashmir because of its scenic beauty, pleasant weather and improving hospitality infrastructure.

“We have seen a clear increase in wedding bookings and inquiries over the past few weeks,” an official at Taj Dal View said. “Families are looking for premium experiences within India and Kashmir has emerged as one of the top choices.”

Officials at The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa said several destination weddings have already been scheduled for the upcoming summer and autumn seasons.

Houseboat owners on Dal Lake also reported growing demand for pre-wedding events, family gatherings and wedding photography sessions.

“For many tourists, Kashmir now offers the same charm and luxury associated with international destinations,” said Ghulam Mohammad, a houseboat owner. “People want scenic locations, cool weather and a unique experience, all of which Kashmir provides.”

Tourists visiting the Valley echoed similar views, saying Kashmir combines natural beauty, luxury hospitality and convenience at a comparatively affordable cost.

“We were planning a wedding abroad initially, but after visiting Kashmir we changed our plans,” said Rhea Sharma, a tourist from Delhi. “The landscapes here are extraordinary and the hospitality has been excellent.”

Tourism industry representatives believe the growing wedding tourism segment could become a major economic boost for Kashmir by generating employment for hotels, transport operators, event planners, photographers, florists and local artisans.

Travel operators said the increasing preference for domestic destinations, coupled with Kashmir’s rising tourism profile, is helping position the Valley as one of India’s emerging wedding tourism hubs.
