Anantnag: The education sector in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district is witnessing growing concern and administrative uncertainty as the post of Chief Education Officer (CEO) has remained vacant for more than a week following the retirement of the previous officer.
The absence of a permanent head in the department has slowed down several important official processes, affecting both educational institutions and the general public.
According to sources within the department, the lack of a designated CEO has resulted in delays in handling routine administrative matters, including approvals, clearances, official documentation, transfers, and other time-sensitive educational affairs. Teachers, employees, and members of the public have expressed frustration over the prevailing situation, saying that the absence of an authorized officer has created confusion and halted decision-making at multiple levels.
Several residents said they are facing unnecessary hardships while trying to complete official formalities linked to the education department.
“We are being made to run from one office to another,” said a local resident while expressing concern over the situation. “Earlier, important documents and permissions would be processed within days, but now there is nobody available with the authority to approve or sign them.”
Members of the teaching fraternity have also voiced concern over the delay in appointing a new Chief Education Officer, stating that the district’s academic administration cannot function effectively without proper leadership. They warned that continued delay could negatively impact the functioning of government schools, particularly at a time when the ongoing academic session requires close monitoring and timely decision-making.
Sources said that monitoring of educational standards, implementation of departmental policies, and supervision of schools across the district are among the major responsibilities currently suffering due to the administrative vacuum.
They added that several institutional matters requiring immediate attention are reportedly pending because of the vacant post.
They believe that the absence of a regular CEO could also affect coordination between schools and higher authorities, thereby creating further complications in the smooth functioning of the department.
The people of Anantnag, along with members of civil society and the teaching community, have urged higher authorities to intervene without further delay and appoint a full-time Chief Education Officer on an urgent basis.
They said that the future of thousands of students should not suffer because of administrative gaps and stressed the need for stable leadership in one of the district’s most important departments.
