Locals allege shortage of teachers, infrastructural gaps

Anantnag: Residents of Amadzoo hamlet in Ashmuqam area of south Kashmir have appealed to the authorities to urgently address multiple issues plaguing the Government Middle School in their locality, saying the lack of basic infrastructure and staff shortage is severely affecting students’ education.
According to locals, the school, established in 1987, currently caters to around 90 students but is functioning under difficult conditions. They said that although six teachers are officially posted at the school, only a few are available for teaching.
“One teacher is on maternity leave, while two others are engaged as BLOs leaving the school understaffed. As a result, the quality of education is suffering and students are not getting proper attention,” a local resident said.
Parents expressed concern over the growing academic gap among students due to the shortage of teaching staff. “Our children are eager to learn, but with limited teachers available, classes are often combined or left unattended. This is impacting their future,” said another resident.
Apart from staff constraints, locals highlighted the absence of proper infrastructure at the school. They said there is inadequate accommodation for students and no proper building to house all classes.
“At times, children are forced to sit and study under the open sky due to lack of space. This becomes even more difficult during extreme weather conditions,” a parent added.
The absence of a playground has further compounded the problem, depriving students of essential physical activity. “There is no ground for the children to play. Education is not just about books; they need space for overall development,” said a local elder.
Residents have urged the education department and district administration to take immediate steps to resolve these issues. “We appeal to the higher authorities to depute additional teaching staff, ensure proper school infrastructure, and provide a suitable building and playground for the students,” they said.
The locals warned that if timely action is not taken, the situation could worsen, affecting the overall educational standards in the area.
