Wanted gangster held after exchange of fire with police in Miran Sahib
Jammu, Apr 27: A wanted gangster and drug smuggler was apprehended after an exchange of fire with police in the Miran Sahib area here late Sunday night, officials said.
An official said that a police party acting on specific intelligence laid a strategic trap near the designated area to intercept Abhineet Singh alias Nagi and his associates, an official said.
Singh, a history-sheeter wanted in over 13 pending FIRs including attempt to murder, rioting and arms smuggling, tried to break the naka (checkpoint) on a motorcycle along with an associate, the official said.
“When challenged, the accused opened fire at the police party. In a calibrated response in self-defence and to prevent public harm, the police team retaliated. Both the accused left the motorcycle and tried to escape taking advantage of darkness,” the official added.
During a subsequent search, one of the accused was found injured in a canal and was taken to a hospital. The other managed to flee, and a search operation is underway.
