Srinagar: At a busy checkpoint in Srinagar, a trained sniffer dog pauses beside a vehicle, circles briefly, and then signals its handler. Within seconds, police personnel move in, turning a routine check into a targeted operation.

This is the new face of Srinagar’s anti-drug campaign.

In a significant escalation of its crackdown on narcotics, Srinagar Police has deployed its specialised Narcotic Dog Squad across multiple locations in the district, strengthening its ability to detect and intercept drug consignments with speed and precision. The initiative is part of an intensified effort to dismantle supply networks and curb the spread of drugs in the city.

Officials said the trained canine units are being positioned at key checkpoints, including major entry and exit points and other sensitive locations, where they can detect concealed narcotics that often go unnoticed during standard inspections.

“The deployment of sniffer dogs has considerably enhanced our operational effectiveness,” a senior police officer in Srinagar said. “These trained units can identify hidden substances within seconds, making them a crucial component of our strategy to combat drug trafficking.”

The move comes amid growing concern over the rise of drug abuse, particularly among young people. Police officials believe that strengthening ground-level enforcement and targeting supply chains is essential to addressing the broader issue.

Alongside enforcement measures, awareness programmes are also being conducted to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse and to encourage community participation in tackling the problem.

Police have urged citizens to cooperate and share any information related to drug peddling, stressing that public support is key to eliminating the menace.

As sniffer dogs continue to patrol checkpoints and surveillance intensifies, the message from Srinagar Police is clear: the crackdown on narcotics is tightening, and those involved will find it increasingly difficult to operate.
