Srinagar: The iconic Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is set to close its gates for the season on April 16 after witnessing an overwhelming response from visitors, even as the silent workforce behind its vibrant display continues working for the next bloom throughout the year.
In just 29 days since its opening, the garden attracted more than 3.5 lakh visitors, including around 1,000 foreign tourists, reaffirming its status as one of the most sought-after spring destinations in the country. Set against the picturesque Zabarwan hills, the garden offered a stunning display of colours, drawing tourists, photographers, and nature lovers in large numbers.
Visitors expressed awe at the beauty and scale of the garden. “It feels like walking through a painting. The colours, the layout—everything is just perfect,” said Riya Sharma, a tourist from Delhi.
Another visitor, Ahmed Khan from Mumbai, said, “I have travelled to many places, but this is truly unique. The tulip garden in Srinagar is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature.”
Foreign tourists also shared their admiration. “This is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen. The backdrop of the mountains makes it even more special,” said Maria Lopez, a visitor from Spain.
While the tulips bloom for only a short period, the real effort unfolds beyond the public eye. Gardeners—often described as the “hidden hands”—remain engaged year-round, carefully tending to the soil, preserving bulbs, and preparing meticulously for the next season.
“The bloom may last weeks, but the effort continues all year. From post-season care to replanting and planning, it is a continuous cycle,” an official said.
The garden has not only enhanced the scenic charm of Srinagar but has also provided a significant boost to tourism and local livelihoods, benefiting hotel owners, transport operators, and small businesses.
As the season comes to an end, attention quietly turns to these dedicated gardeners whose relentless work ensures that the valley blossoms again with renewed vibrance next spring.
