Truce or temporary halt in hostilities
The world was waiting with bated breath as the US ultimatum to bomb critical installations across Iran was nearing. However, the unexpected happened and a temporary halt to the hostilities between the two nations was declared and a two week ceasefire agreement was announced early Wednesday.
The agreement between the United States and Iran to a two-week ceasefire has brought the much-needed pause to the escalating conflict. The deal, brokered with the help of Pakistan and some reportedly by other countries behind the scene sees Iran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, in exchange for a halt in US and Israeli strikes.
Reportedly, Iran has agreed to a 10-point proposal, which includes demands for a permanent ceasefire, lifting of US sanctions, and financial compensation for reconstruction, has been presented as a basis for negotiations. The US has described this proposal as a ‘workable basis’ for talks, indicating a potential shift in the diplomatic landscape.
However, it’s crucial to note that this ceasefire is a tactical pause rather than a resolution. Core disputes, including Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence, remain unresolved. The Iranian Supreme National Security Council has clarified that this move doesn’t signify the end of the war, emphasizing the conditional nature of the ceasefire.
Ironically, the two sides have been at loggerheads since the past five decades. The major concern and critical issue like trust deficit between the two remains. This trust deficit stems from the fact that the US has never allowed Iran or its leadership to gain from any negotiations that have happened in the past.
Even when the bombings by US lead troops started on Iran on Feb 28 last month the top leadership of Iran was holding negotiations to work out a peace deal but the US did not let that happen.
As for now the international community has welcomed the development, with global leaders hoping for a lasting peace. The ceasefire’s success hinges on both parties’ commitment to negotiations and address underlying tensions.
As the world watches, the next two weeks will be critical in determining whether this pause can pave the way for a more permanent solution or will this fragile reprieve lead to lasting peace, or is it just a temporary halt in hostilities?
As of now it seems that the odds against a permanent peace deal weigh quite heavy. But the recent collusion between the two countries has pointed out to the fact that a respected and credible world body needs to be put in place so that occurrences in the Middle East or elsewhere do not take place.
We have the United Nations but how badly the world body has failed on such occasions is for all to see and witness. The world needs an authoritative body that can exercise its writ on the warring nations as such incidents lead to miseries for the people across the globe.
The US-Iran war left the world chocking for energy supplies and price rise was reported across the globe. In such scenario, India and its leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi can play a decisive role in shaping out the UN that is able to intervene in such situations.
The hegemony of few nations on UN like bodies that has otherwise a huge role to play in such circumstances needs to be broken and India needs to adopt a role to help the world body to reshape its existence.
