Traders demand urgent intervention as stagnant water disrupts business, raises health concerns

Pulwama: Shopkeepers and local residents in the main market of Tral have expressed strong resentment over the persistent failure of the drainage system, accusing the concerned department of remaining in “deep slumber” despite repeated complaints.
The faulty drainage network has led to the accumulation of stagnant water in several parts of the busy marketplace, causing inconvenience to traders, pedestrians, and customers alike.
With foul smell and unhygienic conditions worsening by the day, locals fear the situation could trigger health hazards if not addressed immediately.
“We are suffering every single day because of this mess. Dirty water remains stagnant outside our shops, making it difficult for customers to even step inside,” said a local shopkeeper, adding that business has taken a significant hit due to the unhygienic environment.
Another trader said that despite bringing the issue to the notice of the authorities multiple times, no concrete steps have been taken so far. “It feels like no one is listening to us. The drainage system has completely collapsed, and the concerned department seems least bothered,” he said.
Residents of the area echoed similar concerns, stating that the problem worsens during rainfall, when water overflows onto the roads and into nearby shops. “Even a slight spell of rain turns the market into a pool of dirty water. It not only affects business but also poses serious health risks, especially for children and the elderly,” a local resident said.
Shopkeepers also said that the stagnation of wastewater has led to the breeding of mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases. “We are forced to work in these conditions every day. The government talks about development, but on the ground, basic facilities like drainage are in shambles,” said another trader.
The aggrieved traders and residents have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate action to repair and upgrade the drainage system in the market.
They demanded a thorough inspection and a long-term solution to prevent such issues in the future.
