Renowned poet Rafiq Tahir Kawchecki urges students to shun substance abuse

BANDIPORA: In a compelling blend of literature and social awareness, noted poet and activist Rafiq Tahir Kawchecki visited the serene campus of PM Shri Government Secondary School Laharwalpora, Bandipora, delivering a powerful message on the dangers of substance abuse.
Addressing an attentive gathering of students and faculty under overcast afternoon skies, Kawchecki underscored the far-reaching impact of addiction. “Intoxication destroys families irrespective of color, creed, caste, or identity,” he remarked, urging students to remain alert and resilient against such societal evils.
The highlight of the event was the soulful recitation of his poem “Nasha Barbaad Karta Hai” (Addiction Destroys). Renowned for his distinctive voice and evocative delivery, Kawchecki also presented two Kashmiri poems, captivating the audience with a harmonious blend of lyrical beauty and profound social commentary.
The programme commenced with a warm introduction by Javaid Jawad, an award-winning educator, who welcomed the esteemed guest to the school’s vibrant green campus. He described Kawchecki as a prolific writer and committed social reformer whose work consistently promotes societal well-being.
“We are deeply grateful to Kawchecki Sahab for accepting our invitation and sharing such invaluable, life-affirming insights on this sensitive issue in his signature melodious style,” Jawad said in his vote of thanks.
The event concluded on a hopeful note, with students reaffirming their commitment to building a drug-free future—once again highlighting the enduring power of poetry and the spoken word as instruments of meaningful social change.
