Anantnag: Growing frustration is palpable among residents of Dachnipora, Khoveripora, and several adjoining villages in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, as they urge authorities to expedite the construction of the long-awaited Sakhras Bridge—an essential link connecting the two major belts of the area.
The bridge, being executed by the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department under its Saller Sub-Division, has reached nearly 70 percent completion. While officials maintain that the project is progressing steadily and is scheduled for completion by March 2027, locals say the timeline does little to ease their daily struggles.
For thousands of residents, the bridge is not merely an infrastructure project but a critical lifeline. In its absence, people are forced to take long and often treacherous detours, significantly increasing travel time and cost.
“This bridge is not just a structure; it is our everyday necessity,” said Abdul Hameed, a resident of Dachnipora. “Students, patients, traders—everyone is suffering. More than one lakh people depend on this route. We request the authorities to speed up the work so that our hardships can finally end.”
Echoing similar concerns, Nisar Ahmad from Khoveripora highlighted the risks during emergencies. “In medical situations, every minute counts. Unfortunately, due to the lack of connectivity, we lose precious time navigating through longer, poorly maintained routes. Early completion of the bridge can literally save lives,” he said.
Residents also pointed out the broader economic implications of the delay. The region, known for its thriving apple orchards and emerging tourism potential, continues to face logistical challenges due to inadequate connectivity.
Locals believe that the operationalization of the Sakhras Bridge would not only ease transportation but also provide a significant boost to trade and tourism in the area.
Officials, however, have assured that the project is on track and may be completed ahead of schedule. Assistant Executive Engineer of the R&B Saller Sub-Division, Fayaz Ahmed, stated that the department is fully committed to timely execution.
“Work on this mega project is in full swing. Despite seasonal challenges, especially during winter, we have intensified developmental activities to ensure steady progress,” he said. “We are optimistic about completing the bridge well before the stipulated deadline of March 2027.”
Providing details, the official said that approximately Rs 3.50 crore has already been expended, covering nearly 70 percent of the construction. “The remaining work will be taken up in the coming months. Once completed, the bridge will not only improve connectivity but also significantly benefit the tourism sector and apple industry in South Kashmir,” he added.
