Dear Sir,

Energy Shocks Stifle Housing Dreams

The escalating Iran and US friction has weaponized energy costs bleeding India’s real estate sector. With crude and gas surges threatening a 25% spike in electrical components and inflating cement and steel costs, the ‘housing for all’ dream is evaporating as per reports.

Developers are currently cushioning the blow with inventory but this is a temporary dam against a fiscal flood. This volatility disproportionately cripples affordable housing where margins are razor thin. The government must act beyond rhetoric and reduce central excise duties on petroleum products immediately and grant infrastructure status to the entire housing sector to lower borrowing costs.

Failing to decouple construction from global fuel volatility will inevitably result in project stalls and a homeownership crisis for the middle class.
