Jhelum river turning into a drain: MLA Bijbehara
Says conservation laws exist, but no implementation on ground
Jammu: National Conference MLA Dr. Bashir Ahmad Veeri on Monday voiced serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the river Jhelum, saying the water body was being reduced to a drain and called for urgent remedial measures.
The south Kashmir legislator said the Jhelum—locally known as Vyeth—caters to nearly 90 per cent of the region’s drinking water and agricultural requirements. He alleged that unregulated mining and other activities have adversely impacted the river, its embankments, fisheries and biodiversity.
“We have enacted laws like the Water Act, but they have failed to yield tangible results. What we need is effective action on the ground,” Veeri said.
The legislator said he had introduced legislation on the issue and the minister concerned had assured consideration of the points raised. “We have to see what happens on the ground now,” he added.
MLA Veeri said representatives were raising public issues and staying connected with people despite limitations. “We are trying, and now voices from different areas are being heard,” he said. (KNS)
