Srinagar, Mar 31: The government on Tuesday said repair work has been initiated on the Sopore bypass bridge following concerns over the deteriorating condition of its recently laid macadam surface.

The issue was raised in the Assembly by MLA Irshad Rasool Kar through a calling attention notice, highlighting poor quality macadam that has led to potholes and an uneven riding surface on the bridge.

MLA Kar said the condition of the bridge has caused inconvenience to commuters and transporters, especially those connected with Sopore’s fruit mandi, impacting the movement of horticulture produce.

Responding to the issue, the government said the bridge was originally constructed with a rigid cement concrete deck designed for durability and heavy load-bearing.

“To improve riding comfort, a bituminous layer was laid over the concrete surface. However, due to differences in material behaviour, minor localized damage has developed in the top layer,” the government said.

It said the damage is limited to the bituminous wearing course and does not affect the structural integrity of the bridge.

The government attributed the deterioration to heavy traffic, adverse weather conditions and moisture ingress, which have accelerated wear and tear of the surface layer.

“The bridge experiences continuous movement of heavy vehicles linked to the fruit mandi, while freeze-thaw cycles and water seepage have contributed to surface distress,” it said

The government assured that there is no safety concern and the main structure remains stable.

It added that Project BEACON has already started repair work, including removal of damaged portions and restoration using more durable materials.

The work is being carried out on a priority basis but has been temporarily slowed due to rainfall, as dry conditions are required for quality repairs.

“The situation is being closely monitored and the remaining work will be completed expeditiously once weather conditions improve,” the government said. (KNS)
