Srinagar: Police foiled illegal timber smuggling bid in Pulwama by arresting two accused persons involved in the crime, a police spokesman said Friday.
He said that acting on specific and reliable information regarding illegal transportation of forest timber, police laid a naka at Gabalpora to intercept the movement of smugglers operating from Shopian towards Pulwama. During the operation, a group of persons carrying timber on horses was spotted.
On noticing the police presence, some individuals attempted to flee from the spot however, two persons identified as Javaid Ahmad Wagay son of Abdul Khalik Wagay resident of Nardpora, Shopian and Mehraj Ahmad son of Mohammad Asim Zargar resident of Drach, Rajpora, Pulwama were arrested on the spot, while others managed to escape taking advantage of the terrain, the spokesman added.
During the operation, twelve timber logs along with two horses used for transportation were taken into custody, he said.
In this regard, a case FIR No. 42/2026 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Rajpora, and further investigation has been initiated to identify and apprehend the other involved persons, the spokesman added.
