Locals demand immediate action

Pulwama: The residents of Shahoora hamlet in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, comprising several villages, have raised serious concerns over ongoing illegal mining activities, alleging large-scale extraction of soil and sand during nighttime in multiple areas.
According to locals, areas including Chakora, Wussura and adjoining villages have become hotspots of unauthorized mining, where influential elements are reportedly using heavy machinery such as bulldozers and L&T equipment to excavate land under the cover of darkness.
The extraction, they allege, is being carried out particularly on land belonging to locals and other grazing areas, with the material later sold commercially.
“The situation has become alarming. Every night, machines are brought in and large portions of land are dug up without any permission. It is not only illegal but also highly damaging,” said a resident of Chakora.
Another local from Wussura expressed anguish over the environmental degradation, stating that the unchecked mining is causing irreversible harm. “Our grazing lands are being destroyed, and the ecological balance of the area is at risk. Dust, land erosion and loss of fertile soil are affecting our livelihoods,” he said.
Residents said that despite repeated complaints, the concerned authorities have failed to take action, leading to growing frustration among the public. “It is unfortunate that the authorities are acting as silent spectators. If this continues, the damage will be beyond repair,” a group of villagers said.
The locals have put forth a series of demands, urging the administration to immediately halt all illegal mining activities, initiate strict action against those involved, and ensure protection of the affected lands.
“We appeal to the district administration to intervene without delay. If timely steps are not taken, the situation may worsen and lead to serious environmental and social consequences,” they added.
The residents have warned that continued inaction could escalate the issue further, calling for urgent and decisive measures to safeguard the region’s land and environment.
