Drabgam-Thokerpora bridge set to miss deadline as work going at snail’s pace, allege locals
Demand intervention of higher ups, fast pacing of civil works
Pulwama: The delay in the completion of the under-construction bridge over Nallah Romshi, meant to connect Drabgam and Thokerpora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, has sparked concern among local residents.
The project approved following public demand and considered crucial for improving regional connectivity, remains incomplete even after nearly one and a half years.
The bridge, being constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 14 crore, was scheduled for completion by March 31, 2026. However, the ground situation indicates that meeting the deadline appears unlikely.
Locals allege that the pace of construction has been extremely slow, causing significant inconvenience in their daily commute.
The project was taken up under Phase III of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), Batch II (2023–24). According to officials, the initial project cost was estimated at Rs 102.18 lakh, which was later revised to Rs 142.66 lakh. Despite the upward revision in cost, progress on the ground has not been satisfactory.
Officials said that the construction work formally commenced on April 3, 2024, with a deadline set for March 31, 2026. However, given the current pace of work, locals have begun to question whether the project will be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
Residents have urged the administration to expedite the work so that the bridge can be opened for public use at the earliest. In the absence of the bridge, people are forced to cross Nallah Romshi, which is not only difficult but also risky.
“We have our orchards on the other side of the stream, and we have to cross it daily to transport fruits and other goods. The bridge will not only save time but also reduce the risks involved,” said a local resident.
According to locals, the completion of the bridge will benefit thousands of people from Darbagam, Thokarpora, and adjoining areas. It is also expected to improve connectivity with Budgam district and ease movement for students, farmers, and the general public. .
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer PMGSY Division Pulwama, Ghulam u Saqlain assured that the department is making sincere efforts to complete the bridge within the stipulated time.
He said that all necessary support is being provided to the executing agency to ensure early completion of the project.
