From Himalayas to the Coast: Jammu Railways Scripts History with First-Ever Zoo Animal Train Transfer
Leopard cats and black bears embark on 2,800-km rail journey to MGR Chennai; 54-hour trip sets new benchmark in wildlife transport
Jammu: In a landmark move that blends logistics with wildlife care, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has successfully transported rare zoo animals by train for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone in India’s railway-led animal transit.
The historic journey began from Jammu Railway Station, where two leopard cats and two black bears were carefully loaded into a specially designed VPU (Parcel Van) coach attached to Train No. 16032, bound for MGR Chennai Central in Tamil Nadu. Covering a distance of nearly 2,800 kilometres, the animals are expected to complete the north-to-south journey in just 54 hours — significantly faster and safer than conventional road transport.
Officials described the operation as one of the longest structured wildlife transfers undertaken by rail in the country.
Under the leadership of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, the Jammu Division ensured meticulous planning for the movement. Strict Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms were adhered to, with special enclosures, proper ventilation, regulated feeding schedules, and continuous water supply arranged inside the parcel coach to maintain animal welfare throughout the journey.
A dedicated team of zoo veterinarians and wildlife experts accompanied the animals to monitor their health and behaviour at every stage. Railway authorities emphasized that rail transport minimizes stress compared to road journeys, especially during extreme weather conditions, making it a preferred alternative for long-distance wildlife relocation.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Uchit Singhal said the initiative reflects the Jammu Division’s commitment to innovation and safe logistics solutions.
“The Jammu Division is moving forward with new initiatives every day. Earlier, we successfully transported 23 exotic bulls from Bengaluru to Kashmir by rail. Now, with the transfer of zoo animals to Chennai, we are setting another benchmark. Rail transport ensures a safer, smoother and more stress-free journey for animals, even in adverse weather,” he said.
Officials added that the special parcel coach was modified to accommodate wildlife transit requirements, highlighting the railways’ growing capability in handling sensitive and specialized cargo.
The successful execution of this operation not only demonstrates operational excellence but also opens new possibilities for structured, humane and long-distance wildlife transport across India.
With this pioneering effort, Jammu Division has added a new chapter to Indian Railways’ logistical achievements — one that runs on compassion, coordination and cutting-edge planning.
