Cop, civilian killed, SPO injured in militant attack

Srinagar: A cop and a civilian were killed while as another policeman suffered injuries in a militant attack at Warpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday evening.
Reports said that the militants opened fire upon a police party near Warpora police post. “In the incident, an SPO and a civilian died on the spot while as another policeman Showkat Ahmad Khanday of Wagoora Kreeri sustained bullet wounds and has been hospitalized,” police said.
The deceased have been identified as SPO Wajahat Ahmad Bhat son of Asadullah Bhat of Wagoora Kreeri and the civilian as Umar Subhan (22) of Warpora.
Confirming it, a police officer said that the area has been cordoned off to nab the assailants.
Meanwhile, an encounter broke out between militants and security forces at Chadoora area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, police said.
A Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in Zenipora village of Chadoora in on Wednesday evening, police sources said.
They said that during the search operation, the hiding militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated, thus leading to a gunfight.
Officials further stated that the gunfight is going on and Army’s 53 RR and police are trying to zero in on the hiding militants.
“Intermittent exchange of firing was going on till this report was filed,” a top police official said. (with inputs from GNS, KNO)
