Students rue semester pattern of exams: Blame authorities at KU for being insensitive to their needs
Srinagar: The 2016 batch of undergraduate students on Thursday accused the authorities in Kashmir University (KU) of playing with their career by delaying conduct of their combined exams of 5th and 6th semester till September.
The students said the varsity administration has decided to hold their combined exams in September which according to them will delay their degree till the month of November.
“The delay will cost us one academic year as we won’t be able to get admission in outside the state universities,” a group of students said.
The students blamed the varsity administration for continuing with the semester system of exams which has taken a toll on their career.
“The semester system of exams has delayed completion of our degrees and also proved detrimental for our future endeavors,” the students added.
A group of students said they are at the verge of losing one academic year as KU has decided to delay the exam till September.
“If the exams will be held in September then we won’t get admissions in outside state universities where the admission process gets closed in August. The delayed conducted for holding exams will result in delay in declaration of results. In this case the students will lose one academic year,” they said.
They said the combined 5th and 6th semester examination of 2015 batch was conducted in the month of June-July but the varsity was delaying the examination of 2016 batch for unknown reasons.
The agitating students said the continuation of semester system of exams at college level has taken a toll on the academic career as the three years graduation course has been extended to four years.
The outgoing college (5th and 6th semester) students joined the course in 2016 and are yet to complete the course despite the passage of four years.
The students are likely to join their post-graduation courses in 2020, they rued.
“As of now we should have joined the post-graduation courses in the Kashmir University or outside state university but the delay in completion of course has cost us one academic year,” said a 6th semester college student, wishing not to be named.
The outgoing 5th and 6th semester students accused the varsity of being hell bent to waste their one academic year by deferring new academic session to 2020.
“We had requested the varsity authorities to provide us provisional admission in PG courses so that our one year won’t go waste but the admission authorities denied us the favour,” the students said.
The students blamed the varsity for stretching their three year course to four years due to its failure to conduct the exams on time.
“If the varsity has not been able to streamline the semester system of exams then it should have shifted back to previous annual exams. They have put the students at the receiving end,” the students said.
Registrar KU, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir didn’t respond to calls from this newspaper.
