Frequent, unscheduled power outages leave Janglat Mandi Anantnag residents in distress
Anantnag: The residents of Janglat Mandi and several adjoining localities in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town have voiced strong resentment over frequent power outages and prolonged unscheduled electricity cuts, alleging that the erratic power supply has been continuing for nearly a month and has thrown normal life out of gear.
The residents said that despite repeated appeals, the electricity supply has remained highly unreliable, with power interruptions occurring several times a day and often lasting for long durations without any prior intimation from the authorities.
Social activist Advocate Muzamil, along with several local residents, said the recurring outages have caused immense inconvenience to people from all walks of life, particularly during the ongoing spell of hot weather.
“The situation has become unbearable. Electricity goes off multiple times a day without any schedule or notice. Students preparing for examinations are unable to study, patients dependent on electrical medical equipment suffer, elderly people are struggling in the scorching heat, while traders are incurring losses due to repeated interruptions in power supply,” Advocate Muzamil said.
The residents said the uncertainty surrounding the power supply has also affected routine household activities, disrupted businesses, and increased dependence on costly power backup arrangements.
“We understand that maintenance work is necessary, but consumers deserve to know in advance if power has to be snapped. The department should issue proper notifications so that people can make alternative arrangements instead of leaving them in complete uncertainty,” said a local resident.
Another resident said the continuous outages have become a daily ordeal. “Sometimes electricity remains unavailable for hours without any explanation. It is extremely difficult to manage daily life, especially for families with children, elderly persons and patients. We are only asking for a reliable and predictable power supply,” he said.
The residents urged the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) to immediately look into the issue, identify the reasons behind the persistent disruptions, and restore a stable electricity supply to Janglat Mandi and its adjoining areas at the earliest.
They also appealed to the department to adopt a transparent communication mechanism by informing consumers in advance about scheduled maintenance shutdowns or technical faults through public notices or social media platforms.
