Demand intervention of higher ups

Pulwama: Alarmed by the deteriorating quality of drinking water, residents of the twin villages of Sirnoo and Babgund in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have appealed to the authorities for urgent intervention, alleging that the water supplied through a borewell-fed overhead tank is contaminated and unsafe for human consumption.
According to residents, the water being supplied to households has developed an unusual colour, unpleasant taste and foul appearance, making it unsuitable not only for drinking but also for cooking and other daily household needs.
They fear that prolonged use of such water could expose people to serious water-borne diseases and other health complications.
“The water supplied through the overhead tank appears contaminated. Its colour and taste have changed significantly, leaving people worried about its safety. We are deeply concerned about the health of our children, elderly family members and those already suffering from illnesses,” said local resident  Javid Ahmad
Residents alleged that the overhead storage tank is being supplied with water drawn from a pit, raising serious questions about the quality of the source and the absence of adequate purification measures before distribution.
Another villager said access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic right and that the authorities must ensure that every household receives water meeting prescribed health and safety standards.
“The possibility of water-borne diseases cannot be ignored if contaminated water continues to be supplied. Immediate steps are needed before the situation turns into a public health crisis,” residents said.
The villagers have demanded a comprehensive inspection of the water source, borewell and overhead storage tank to determine the cause of contamination. They have also called for regular laboratory testing of water quality, installation of an effective filtration system, periodic cleaning and disinfection of the storage tank, and timely maintenance of the entire water supply infrastructure.
Residents said these measures are essential to restore public confidence in the drinking water supply system and ensure uninterrupted access to clean, safe and potable water.
“We are not asking for anything extraordinary—only safe drinking water for our families. The authorities must act without delay to protect public health,” they said.
Meanwhile, an official from the Jal Shakti Department acknowledged the complaints and said the matter would be examined.
He assured that the department would assess the situation and take appropriate action if any deficiencies in the water supply system are found.
