J&K to get first National Centre of Excellence at Awantipora: LG Sinha

Srinagar, June 25: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will get its first National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) at Awantipora in Pulwama district, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha announced on Thursday.

LG Sinha in a post on X expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for clearing the project, which he said would serve as a premier national facility for High Altitude Sports and various athletic competitions.

“The NCOE campus will bring world-class infrastructure and elite coaching to our Union Territory, training the next generation of Olympic and international champions,” the Lt Governor said in a post.

The centre will also focus on skilling thousands of youths across multiple sports disciplines, he added.

LG Sinha termed the approval a significant milestone for strengthening the sports ecosystem in the region.

According to officials, the facility will include athletics tracks, indoor courts, football and hockey turfs, kabaddi and kho-kho courts, a shooting range, a swimming pool, a taekwondo hall, an integrated strength and conditioning complex, a rehabilitation centre, hostels, and sports science and sports medicine centres.
