Akshay Kumar’s Rs 1 Crore Gift Brings New Hope to School Along LoC in Gurez
Modern education block with library and computer lab transforms learning conditions for children in remote Tulail village
Srinagar: A government middle school located in the remote Tulail sector of north Kashmir’s Gurez Valley has witnessed a major transformation nearly five years after Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar donated Rs 1 crore for its development.
The Government Middle School at Nero Tulail, situated close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Bandipora district, now houses a newly constructed academic block named “Shri Hari Om Bhatia Education Block” in memory of the actor’s father.
Officials said the newly built infrastructure includes four modern classrooms, a computer laboratory, a library and separate office space for teachers, significantly improving facilities for students studying in one of Kashmir’s most isolated border regions.
The school earlier functioned from old and inadequate rooms, with students facing multiple challenges due to lack of proper infrastructure. The new facility has also improved arrangements under the midday meal scheme, providing children with a cleaner and better environment.
Akshay Kumar had visited Tulail in 2021 during a tour organised by the Border Security Force (BSF), where he interacted with local residents, schoolchildren and jawans posted along the LoC. Moved by the condition of the school, he had announced financial assistance for upgrading the institution.
During the visit, the actor also paid tributes to soldiers at a war memorial and spent time with BSF personnel stationed in the border area.
Residents of Tulail said the new academic block has brought fresh hope for children living in the far-off mountainous region.
“Earlier, our children lacked even basic educational facilities. Now they have access to computers, books and better classrooms. It has completely changed the atmosphere of the school,” a local resident said.
Officials said the project has now been completed and the new block is fully operational, helping improve both teaching standards and learning opportunities for students living in the frontier belt of Gurez Valley.
