Police conducts wild bung, poppy destruction drive

Baramulla: Continuing its sustained efforts under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), police in Baramulla carried out a wild bhang and poppy destruction drive along the roadside areas of Chichlora–Goigam–Pinjoora in coordination with local village committees, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
The drive was conducted in the presence of the concerned Numberdars and Chowkidars, reflecting strong community participation and collective commitment towards curbing the drug menace from society. During the operation, wild bhang plants growing in the area were identified and destroyed successfully as part of the ongoing anti-drug awareness and eradication campaign, a police spokesman said.
He reiterated commitment towards creating a drug-free society and emphasized the importance of active public participation in eliminating narcotic substances at the grassroots level.
Locals were also urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with Police by sharing information related to drug cultivation, trafficking, or abuse in their areas. Police remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the youth and strengthen the vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat,” the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, police said that acting on reliable information it came to notice that a person identified as Faroq Ahmad Malla S/o Habibullah Malla R/o Check Jamal Mir, Palhalan had illegally cultivated poppy crop on a patch of land in the area.
Accordingly, a joint team comprising Police, Executive Magistrate concerned, and officials from the Agriculture and Excise Departments was deputed to the spot. During the operation, the illegally cultivated poppy crop was destroyed on the spot in accordance with legal procedures. In this connection, Case FIR No. 101/2026 under Sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act has been registered and investigation has been taken up, the spokesman added.
