Six drug peddlers arrested, says police
Srinagar: Police arrested six drug peddlers in Anantnag, Shopian and Awantipora and seized significant quantity of contraband substances in separate operations, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
He said that a police party during naka checking at Ashajipora Janglatmandi, intercepted and apprehended three suspicious persons. Upon search, 2.242 kg cannabis powder was recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Arshid Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Wani and Muzaffar Ahmad Mir son of Mohammad Maqbool Mir both residents of Batengoo Anantnag and Mohammad Rafiq Sofi son of Ghulam Hasan Sofi resident of Zadoora Mirbazar.
Moreover, a police team was deputed towards Buchoo and adjoining areas for checking, meanwhile one suspicious person at Danwathpora was intercepted and apprehended. He was identified as Ali Mohammad Mochi son of Ghulam Qadir Mochi resident of Buchoo Kokernag. During search of a nylon bag being carried by him, 8 kg of charas powder-like substance was recovered. The accused was arrested on the spot and contraband seized as per procedure.
In Shopian, a police party at a checkpoint established at Manihal Crossing Imamsahib, intercepted and apprehended a suspicious person. Upon search, a 4.340Kgs of charas-like substance was recovered from his possession. The accused has been identified as Gowhar Ahmad Wani resident of DK Pora, the spokesman added.
In Awantipora, a police party at a checkpoint established at Katipora Chersoo intercepted and apprehended one suspicious person identified as Bilal Ahmad Bhat son of Mohammad Shaban Bhat resident of Batipora Chersoo. During search, contraband substance (charas powder-like substance) weighing approximately 131 grams was recovered from his possession. The accused has been arrested and accordingly, a case FIR No. /2026 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Awantipora and investigation has been set into motion.
All the accused have been arrested and accordingly, cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective Police Stations, and further investigation is underway to unearth the broader network involved, the spokesman added.
