Allege official apathy, demand repair of road

Kulgam: In a striking example of public initiative amid official inaction, local drivers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have taken it upon themselves to repair potholes along the vital Kulgam–Katrsoo road, a stretch that had long been a source of distress for commuters.
The road, which connects several villages and serves as an important route for students, patients, and daily travellers, has remained in a severely dilapidated condition for months.
Deep potholes and uneven surfaces have not only slowed down traffic but also led to frequent vehicle damage and safety risks.
Frustrated by the lack of timely intervention from the concerned authorities, a group of drivers voluntarily began filling potholes using available materials, aiming to provide at least temporary relief to commuters.
“We could no longer wait for official repairs while our vehicles continued to suffer and passengers remained at risk,” said one of the drivers involved in the effort. “Every day, we travel on this road and witness the hardships people face. Students get delayed, patients struggle to reach hospitals, and transporters incur heavy maintenance costs.”
Another driver said the poor condition of the road often turns routine travel into a risky journey.
“At several spots, the road is almost non-motorable. During rains, the potholes fill with water, making it difficult to judge their depth. This leads to accidents and damages vehicles frequently,” he added.
The drivers said their collective action is not just about repairing the road but also about sending a message.
“This is our way of highlighting the issue. We are doing what we can, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the authorities to ensure proper and lasting repairs,” they said.
Locals from nearby areas have appreciated the initiative, calling it a “commendable act of community service.” Many residents said that such efforts reflect both the resilience of the people and the urgent need for government agencies to be more responsive.
“We are grateful to these drivers for stepping in, but this is not a permanent solution,” said a local resident. “The administration must take immediate notice and carry out macadamization of the entire stretch before the situation worsens further.”
The drivers have appealed to the concerned departments to expedite comprehensive repair work and prevent further deterioration of the road, warning that continued neglect could lead to more serious consequences for public safety and mobility.
