Sopore lecturer suspended, police files case after student alleges harassment

Students hold protest; authorities close three colleges till Apr 18

Srinagar: A police case has been filed against a senior lecturer posted in north Kashmir’s Sopore town after a girl student accused him of harassment, even as the teacher has been suspended with inquiry ordered into the matter.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Iftikhar Talib, said the teacher has been booked and an investigation has been set into motion after girl student’s allegations.
Meanwhile, Directorate of School Education Kashmir suspended the lecturer with immediate effect while inquiry into his conduct has also been ordered.
Joint Director North has been appointed as the inquiry officer to conduct a time bound probe and has been directed to submit the report within 15 days.
Following the allegations, students held a protest in Sopore town demanding strict action against the lecturer.
Meanwhile, authorities ordered suspension of classwork in three educational institutions in Sopore following protests over allegations of harassment.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, S A Raina said that academic activities at Government Higher Secondary School, Boys Higher Secondary School and Government Degree College Sopore will remain suspended from April 15 to April 18.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the area following protests over harassment allegations. (KNO)
