Budget Session of Parliament to reconvene on April 16, likely for three days
New Delhi: The Budget Session of Parliament will reconvene on April 16 after a brief recess to pass bills to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 so that the women’s reservation law can be implemented at the earliest.
Sources said the two Houses will reconvene for three days – April 16-18 – to take up the proposed legislations.
The government is learnt to have conveyed to the opposition parties that the Houses are likely to meet for three days beginning April 16.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, while speaking in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, said the House will meet again soon to consider a key legislation.
“We have certain bills and important issues, and we have shared this with the opposition also. We are going to have a very important bill in the next two-three weeks,” he said.
According to the government calendar, the House was scheduled to adjourn sine die (for an indefinite period) on April 2.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday till April 16 amid indications that the government may bring a bill to increase seats in Lok Sabha and state assemblies to implement the women’s reservation law.
The Lower House was adjourned soon after the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Bill, 2026 was passed by voice vote.
Speaker Om Birla said this morning he received a request from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to reconvene the House on April 16 for urgent government business.
He said there will be no Question Hour, Zero Hour, private members’ business, when the House reconvenes.
According to sources, the two Houses will reconvene for three days from April 16 to take up the proposed legislations.
This was the second half of the Budget Session and the House usually adjourns sine die at the end of it. The House normally meets in the Monsoon Session after this.
However, there have been indications from the government side that it wants the House to assemble on April 16 for getting bills needed for the implementation of the women’s quota law passed.
Notably, the Rajya Sabha was also adjourned on Thursday to meet again on April 16.
The House, which was to be adjourned sine die on Thursday, will now again meet at 11 am on Thursday, April 16.
As per the schedule announced for the Budget Session of Parliament that started on January 28, both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha were to adjourn sine die on April 2 (Thursday).
