Shopian: Once envisioned as a vibrant recreational space for residents and a potential attraction for visitors, Padpawan Park in the main market of south Kashmir’s Shopian district today stands in a state of neglect, raising serious concerns among locals about the misuse of public funds and lack of maintenance.
Constructed at a significant cost running into crores of rupees, the park was designed to provide a refreshing green space for the general public, complete with huts, walkways, and a Tourist Reception Centre (TRC). However, years after its completion, the infrastructure appears to have deteriorated, with much of it lying unused and in disrepair.
Visitors to the park complain that the huts—once meant to serve as resting spots are now in a dilapidated condition.
“The park had huge potential to become a major attraction in Shopian, especially given its central location. But today, it reflects sheer negligence. The huts are falling apart and no one seems to be taking responsibility,” said a local shopkeeper from the main market.
Another resident said that despite the construction of a Tourist Reception Centre within the park premises, it has not been made fully functional. “Crores have been spent, but the TRC is yet to serve its purpose. It could have boosted tourism and provided information and facilities to visitors, but it remains largely closed or underutilized,” he said.
Locals further stated that the lack of regular maintenance has not only reduced footfall but also raised safety concerns. “Families hesitate to visit the park now.
The residents have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to restore the park, repair the damaged infrastructure, and make the Tourist Reception Centre operational. They emphasized that proper upkeep could transform Padpawan Park into a valuable public asset and a boost for local tourism.
“We are not asking for new projects. Just revive what already exists. If maintained properly, this park can once again become a lively space for people,” a local youth added.
Despite repeated concerns raised by the public, officials have yet to outline a clear plan for the park’s restoration, leaving residents disappointed and questioning the accountability in utilization of public resources.
