Awareness Programme on Senior Citizens’ Welfare Held at GHSS Sopore

Sopore: In a significant initiative aimed at promoting the rights, dignity, and welfare of elderly citizens, the Tehsil Social Welfare Office Sopore on Wednesday organized an awareness programme under the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrC) at Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore.
The programme witnessed active participation from students, teachers, senior citizens, and local residents, and was designed to sensitize the community—especially the youth—about the importance of respecting, protecting, and supporting elderly members of society. The event also highlighted various welfare schemes, legal provisions, and support systems available for senior citizens, a statement issued here said.
Speaking on the occasion, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer Sopore, Wasim Ahmad, underscored the vital role senior citizens play as the backbone of society. He stressed that elders deserve utmost respect, dignity, and care, adding that it is the collective responsibility of families, communities, and institutions to ensure their well-being and security. He further elaborated on various government initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly, urging people to make full use of these schemes.
The Tehsildar Sopore, who attended the programme as the Chief Guest, emphasized the need for a collective societal approach in safeguarding the interests of senior citizens. In his address, he described elderly individuals as invaluable assets whose wisdom and life experiences serve as guiding lights for younger generations. He called for stronger family bonds and community engagement to ensure that elders live with dignity and respect.
During the programme, resource persons from different departments delivered insightful sessions on issues related to elderly care, including healthcare, legal rights, emotional well-being, and social security. They highlighted the growing need to strengthen both familial and community-based support systems to address the challenges faced by senior citizens in today’s fast-changing world.
Participants were encouraged to actively contribute towards building a compassionate society that values empathy, respect, and inclusivity for all age groups, particularly the elderly. The interactive sessions also allowed attendees to share their views and experiences, making the programme both informative and engaging.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks, wherein the organizers expressed gratitude to all participating departments, school authorities, and attendees for their cooperation and support in making the programme a success.
