Takia Tral residents protest ‘acute’ water shortage
Residents seek MLA’s intervention
Pulwama: The residents of Pashad Takia Razak Shah area in Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district staged a silent protest against the persistent shortage of drinking water resulting in hardships being faced by the local population.
Men, women, and elderly residents gathered peacefully in the locality, expressing their anguish over the lack of adequate water supply. The protesters said that despite repeated pleas to the concerned departments, the issue remains unresolved, forcing them to rely on unsafe and irregular water sources.
Locals stated that the shortage has severely impacted daily life, with households struggling to meet basic needs such as cooking, washing, and sanitation. “We are suffering silently for years. Our children and elderly are the worst affected. Clean drinking water is our basic right, yet we are deprived of it,” said one of the protesters.
Residents alleged that the water supply system in the area is insufficient to cater to the growing population. They added that during winter months and the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, the crisis intensified further, making the situation unbearable.
Protesters have urged their local MLA Rafiq Ahmad Naik to personally intervene and ensure that the concerned departments take swift and concrete measures to resolve the problem.
They demanded the repair of existing pipelines, augmentation of water supply schemes, and regular monitoring to prevent future shortages.
“We are not asking for luxuries, just a consistent supply of clean drinking water. We appeal to our elected representative to listen to our grievances and act immediately,” another resident said.
Residents said that when their demands are not addressed promptly, they have no option other than to protest.
They have sought the immediate intervention of concerned authorities in this regard.
