Authorities urge public cooperation as modern facility aims to curb pollution, improve hygiene

Pulwama: In a major push towards sustainable urban development and improved sanitation, a Solid Waste Management Plant has commenced trial operations in the Newa area of Pulwama.
The facility marks a significant step by the local administration to address long-standing issues related to unscientific garbage disposal and environmental degradation in the town.
According to officials from the Municipal Committee Pulwama, the plant has been equipped with modern machinery designed to handle, segregate, and process waste in a scientific manner. The installation of additional equipment is also underway, which is expected to further enhance the plant’s operational efficiency and waste-processing capacity in the coming weeks.
Officials stated that the plant will collect and treat solid waste generated from various wards, reducing the reliance on open dumping sites that have long posed environmental and health risks. “This facility will ensure proper segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, thereby minimizing pollution and promoting eco-friendly waste management practices,” an official said.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve overall cleanliness in the town, while also helping to prevent the contamination of water bodies and the spread of diseases linked to improper waste disposal.
Authorities believe that once fully operational, the plant will serve as a model for scientific waste management in other parts of the district.
Meanwhile, civic authorities have stressed the importance of public participation in making the initiative successful.
Residents have been strongly advised against dumping garbage into streams, other water bodies and public spaces, practices that not only disrupt daily life but also choke drainage systems and harm the local ecosystem.
The Municipal Committee has appealed to citizens to adopt responsible waste disposal habits, including proper segregation at the household level, to support the functioning of the plant. “Community cooperation is key to ensuring a cleaner and healthier Pulwama,” officials added.
With the trial run underway, authorities remain optimistic that the project will usher in a new era of efficient waste management, paving the way for a cleaner environment and improved quality of life for residents
