Further development in pipeline for future tourism infrastructure

Pulwama: The Tourism Department informed the Legislative Assembly that the picturesque meadows of Namblan, Shidak and their adjoining areas witness a significant influx of visitors during the summer months, but tourist footfall drops sharply in autumn and winter due to heavy snowfall and poor accessibility.
Replying to a question raised by Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir, the department acknowledged the growing popularity of these scenic spots among locals and tourists alike. However, it pointed out that basic amenities such as food points, public toilets, seating benches and shelter sheds are currently unavailable at Namblan, Shidak, Kahrout and nearby meadows.
Officials explained that the primary hurdle in developing on-site tourist facilities is the non-availability of land, as these meadows fall under the territorial jurisdiction of the Forest Department, making construction subject to strict regulations and clearances.
Despite these limitations, the department highlighted that several tourism-related projects have already been established in the wider Sangarwani belt to support visitor movement.
These include a Tourist Facilitation Centre at Bagh-e-Sangarwani and eco-log huts developed under a central tourism development scheme, aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and improving visitor experience.
Taking note of the demand raised by the MLA during a recent district-level review meeting in Pulwama, the Tourism Department has formally requested the District Administration to identify and demarcate a suitable patch of land in the Sangarwani–Namblan area for future tourism infrastructure.
“Once land is made available and the necessary clearances are obtained, the department intends to develop essential tourist facilities in a phased manner,” officials assured, adding that the proposed infrastructure would focus on improving comfort, safety and overall accessibility for visitors.
Local residents and tourism stakeholders have welcomed the move, expressing hope that improved facilities will not only boost tourist inflow beyond the summer season but also generate livelihood opportunities for nearby communities.
