Jammu: The Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, beginning February 2 in Jammu, is expected to witness sharp political exchanges, with opposition parties gearing up to corner the government on issues that directly impact the daily lives of people across the Union Territory.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has signalled an aggressive stance, with daily wagers, power curtailment, unemployment, inflation and governance failures set to dominate its intervention. BJP Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said the party would press the government for accountability and concrete timelines. “Daily wagers have been waiting for justice for years. Power cuts continue to trouble households and businesses, and unemployment remains a serious concern. The government must come prepared with answers, not assurances,” Sharma said.
Echoing similar concerns, BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma said the budget session should not be reduced to rhetoric. “People are struggling with rising prices and erratic power supply. The government must spell out a clear roadmap for regularisation of daily wagers and improvement in basic services,” he said, adding that the BJP would raise people’s issues forcefully inside the House.
The People’s Democratic Party has also announced that it will highlight people’s issues during the session, stressing that the budget must reflect ground realities and provide relief to economically stressed sections.
The session assumes added importance as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is set to present his second budget, a document keenly awaited for policy direction, fiscal priorities and welfare measures.
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Abdur Rahim Rather expressed hope that the session would be peaceful and productive. “I am hopeful of a dignified, smooth and fruitful session in the larger interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
