Scientific innovation and modern farming practices bring national recognition to a progressive farmer from Pampore

Pulwama: A PhD scholar hailing from Pulwama district, Dr Sajjad Akbar Wani has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Farmer of the Year Award 2025’ for his outstanding contribution to agriculture and sustainable farming.
A distinguished PhD scholar, gold medallist and United Nations awardee, Dr Wani has been recognised for successfully blending scientific research, modern agricultural technology and practical farming to significantly enhance crop productivity and promote eco-friendly agricultural practices.
Hailing from a farming family, Dr Sajjad Akbar Wani is a resident of Chandhara village in Pampore area of Pulwama district.
Despite achieving high academic excellence, he chose to remain deeply connected to his roots, working directly in the fields while applying innovative research-based techniques.
His efforts have not only improved farm yields but have also introduced efficient and sustainable methods that are benefiting the broader farming community.
Through his research, Dr Wani has contributed several modern and effective agricultural techniques that have helped farmers achieve better output with reduced environmental impact.
As a practicing farmer, he has demonstrated that science-driven agriculture can be both profitable and sustainable. His work has inspired a growing number of young people to view agriculture as a respectable and viable career option.
The prestigious award was presented on December 9, 2025, during a grand ceremony held at the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi. The event witnessed the presence of renowned agricultural scientists, experts and progressive farmers from across the country.
Expressing his happiness, Dr Wani said that he takes immense pride in being a farmer despite his academic background. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue working for the upliftment of agriculture and to encourage future generations to stay connected with farming.
Addressing the gathering, he emphasized that along with education, youth should be motivated to engage in the agricultural sector, as it not only ensures dignified livelihood opportunities but also promotes physical well-being and active lifestyles.
He added that the honour is not just a personal achievement but a collective recognition for Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Pulwama district.
