Flood protection bund construction gains momentum in Hiller block
Residents welcome initiative, call for time-bound completion
Anantnag: Construction of a vital flood protection bund is progressing steadily in the Hiller Block of Kokernag, where authorities have intensified efforts to reinforce the embankment along the local stream.
The initiative has been widely appreciated by residents of Bagt Mohalla, who say the structure is essential for shielding their homes and farmland from seasonal flood threats.
Locals said that with the rise in water flow expected in the coming months, completing the bund on time has become a matter of urgency for the community.
“Every year, the water level increases during early spring, and our locality becomes vulnerable,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Bagt Mohalla.
“This bund is our only protection. We are thankful that the work has finally started, but we request the department to finish it before the water level rises,” he added.
Another local, Mushtaq Ahmad, echoed the concerns, stressing that delays could expose the area to unnecessary risk.
“The machinery is on the ground and work is going on, but it needs to be sped up,” he said. “If the bund is completed early, it will save us from fear and losses. The department has our full support.”
Residents were unanimous in expressing gratitude to the concerned authorities for initiating the long-pending project.
They said the construction will significantly reduce the threat of inundation, which has been a recurring worry for the locality.
“We appreciate the efforts of the department, but timely completion is key,” said local elder Ghulam Nabi. “Once the bund is fully ready, we can face the upcoming season with confidence.”
Locals hope the work will be completed ahead of schedule, ensuring adequate protection from potential flood-related hazards as the region heads toward a period of increased water discharge.
